Here’s What You’ll Need
Step by Step Guide: How to Light Your LEGO® Shuttle Carrier Aircraft
Step 1: Removing Parts
Remove the NASA Space Shuttle Enterprise from the back of the aircraft. If you’d like to light up the NASA Space Shuttle Enterprise—which is part of the LEGO® Shuttle Carrier Aircraft—check out the blog for it here.
Remove the tail of the plane.
The plane will start to tip forward, so remove it from the stand and flip it over.
From both wings, remove the 1x6 grey plate and 1x2 inverted slope shown above and the 2x6 grey tile shown below.
To remove each wing, rotate the wing away from the belly of the plane, then pull outward. Remove both wings now.
Step 2: Lighting the Left Wing
You will need the following parts:
- 2x Astro Regular Warm White 30cm Lights
- 1x Astro Large Warm White 30cm Light
- 1x 3 Dock
- 1x 1x4 Tether
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate - Transparent Red
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Transparent Clear
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Black
- 3x 1x1 Round Plate with Bar Handle - Black
- 1x 1x1 Tile with Open O Clip - Black
- 2x 1x1x2/3 30 Slope - Transparent Clear
- 1x 2x2 Plate with Rounded Bottom (Boat Stud) - Transparent Clear
- 1x Skeleton Arm, Bent with Horizontal Clips - Black
Remove these pieces from the tip of the wing.
Remove the grey 1x2 wedge slope.
Place an Astro Regular Warm White 30cm Light on the 2x2 wedge plate, and cover the light with a 1x1 Round Plate - Transparent Red piece.
Push the pieces back into place, with the wire pointing towards the other end of the wing.
Remove the engines, and the grey 1x2 inverted slopes.
Remove this 1x2 grey slope piece.
Remove the 3x12 wedge plate from the underside of the wing.
And remove these pieces from the wing.
Place an Astro Regular Warm White 30cm onto the stud next to the sloped pieces, and then place a Transparent Clear 1x1 slope over the top of it.
Pull the cable off to the side, and then return it to the wing. Then place a 1x1 Transparent Clear Slope on the stud next to the light.
To create the spotlight, thread the end of the Astro Large Warm White 30cm light through the hole of the 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Black.
Bend the head of the light at a 90° angle to the cable, to get it to sit flush inside the piece.
Place a 1x1 Round Plate with a Bar Handle - Black on the 1x1 round plate, then thread the cable through the bar handle.
Clip a 1x1 Tile with Open O Clip - Black to the bar.
Connect another 1x1 Round Plate with Bar Handle - Black to the 1x1 Tile with Clip.
Clip the Skeleton Arm onto the bar, then clip yet another 1x1 Round Plate with Bar Handle - Black to the other end of the arm.
Thread the cable through both sets of bar handles.
Attach the spotlight assembly to the underside of the wing.
Pull both cables tautly along the wing, placing them behind the white hinge plates.
Place a transparent round plate next to the spotlight assembly, and then place the 2x2 Boat Stud over the pieces and the cables.
Replace one of the 1x2 Grey Inverted Slopes over the cables.
The remaining cable from the other end of the wing will be long. Fold it in half, then clip it under the other 1x2 Inverted Grey Slope. You can adjust the cable length later.
Combine the 3 Dock and the 1x4 Tether together, then plug all the cables into the dock.
Clip the dock down, and replace any missing parts, including the wedge plate, and the engine assemblies.
The Left Wing is done.
Step 3: Lighting the Right Wing
You will need the following parts:
- 2x Astro Regular Warm White 30cm Lights
- 1x Astro Large Warm White 30cm Light
- 1x 3 Dock
- 1x 1x4 Tether
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate - Transparent Green
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Transparent Clear
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Black
- 3x 1x1 Round Plate with Bar Handle - Black
- 1x 1x1 Tile with Open O Clip - Black
- 2x 1x1x2/3 30 Slope - Transparent Clear
- 1x 2x2 Plate with Rounded Bottom (Boat Stud) - Transparent Clear
- 1x Skeleton Arm, Bent with Horizontal Clips - Black
The Right Wing is exactly the same as the left wing. The only two differences are that all the assemblies will be mirrored, and the transparent red plate is replaced with a transparent green plate.
Remove the engines and the 1x2 grey inverted slopes.
Remove the wingtip assembly, and remove the 1x2 wedge slope.
Place an Astro Regular Warm White 30cm light over the stud, and cap with a 1x1 Round Plate - Transparent Green.
Replace on the wing.
Remove the 3x12 Wedge Plate.
Remove the 1x2 Slope.
Remove these pieces at the end.
Place the last Astro Regular Warm White 30cm Light onto the stud, and cap with a 1x1 Slope - Transparent Clear.
Replace onto the wing, and put the last 1x1 Slope - Transparent Clear on the exposed stud next to it.
To build the spotlight, thread the Astro Large Warm White 30cm light through the 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Black.
Place a 1x1 Round Plate with a Bar Handle - Black on the 1x1 round plate and thread the cable through the bar handle.
Clip a 1x1 Tile with an open O Clip to the bar handle, then place another 1x1 Round Plate with a bar handle on the tile.
Clip a Skeleton Arm to the bar handle, then clip yet another 1x1 Round Plate with a Bar Handle to the other end of the arm, and finally thread the cable through all the bar handles.
Place it on the underside of the wing.
Pull the cables tautly down the wing, and place a 1x1 Transparent Plate next to the spotlight. Connect the assembly to the wing and pin the cables down with the 2x2 Transparent Clear Boat Stud.
Neaten the cables as before, folding the longer one in half to hide some length, and clip the 1x2 Inverted Slopes over the cables.
Combine the 3 Dock and the 1x4 Tether together, then plug all the cables into the dock.
Replace the engines and the wedge pieces before continuing. Unlike me, who forgot.
Step 4: Connecting the Wings
You will need the following part:
Reattach both wings, by pushing the wings in then clipping down the bar handles into the clips.
Grab a 30cm Belt, and plug one end into each 3 Dock on the wings.
On one side, run the cable tightly across the exposed 1x6 plates, and clip down the 2x6 tile.
Pull the cable tightly across the landing gear bay. Make sure the cable is taut. Fold the cable back on itself so that some length is used, then clip it into place with the 2x6 tile.
Secure both wings by reattaching the 1x6 plates with the inverted slopes.
Check that the landing gear mechanism works. It may lightly snag the cable, but so long as it works without force, it should be fine. If it doesn’t work, readjust the cable so that it works correctly.
Reattach the tail fins.
Step 5: Lighting the Stand
You will need the following parts:
- 1x Astro Large Warm White 30cm Light
- 1x 60cm Flux Belt
- 1x 30cm Belt
- 1x 6 Dock
- 1x 1x2 Plate, Modified with 1 Stud (Jumper) - Black
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Black
- 1x 1x1 Round Plate with Bar Handle - Black
- 1x 1x1 Tile with Open O Clip - Black
Remove all the pieces from the very top of the stand, as shown.
Remove the plate from the very bottom of the stand, and remove one of the plates and two of the inverted slopes from the spine of the stand.
Place the 1x2 Modified Jumper Plate onto the top of the stand.
To build the spotlight, run an Astro Large Warm White 30cm Light through a 1x1 Round Plate with Open Stud - Black.
Place a 1x1 Round Plate with Bar Handle on the Round Plate, then thread the cable through the bar handle.
Clip a 1x1 Tile with Open O Clip - Black onto the bar handle.
Place the spotlight onto the Jumper Plate.
Run the cable down the top towards the spine. Hide some of the cable inside the inverted slope, and clip it down with a 2x3 Inverted Slope that had been removed.
Clip the 2x8 Plate over part of the cable, ensuring that the plug is still free to be plugged into the dock.
Replace the two plates at the top of the stand, and replace the 3x6 wedge plate assembly.
Plug the light into the 6 dock, and place the 6 dock down.
Plug the 60cm Flux Belt into the 6 Dock, then run the cable down the spine of the stand, clipping it in place with the remaining plates and inverted slopes.
Connect the remaining 30cm Belt into the 6 Dock.
Step 6: Connecting the Stand and the Plane
Connect the other end of the 30cm Belt to one of the docks under the wing.
Close up the Landing Gear if it isn’t already, and ensure that all the pieces are back on the plane and the stand.
To hide the cable, pull the cable back along the belly of the plane as you place it down on the stand.
Reattach the shuttle, and you should be ready to turn the power on!
